Hello my name is Richard and I am a local Imperial Beach golf coach with over 41 years of playing experience & over 15 years of teaching experience! I am also certified through Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) in Oceanside, California. I started playing the game of golf at age 8 in Scottsdale, Arizona. My first competition was at age 9 with the Junior PGA program in Phoenix, Arizona until age 11. I played in World Juniors San Diego at age 10 (Mission Bay G.C.). My first and only professional lessons were with Hank Haney in Mesa, AZ (age 11).
I then relocated to Carlsbad in North County San Diego. There I then attended Carlsbad High School and played on varsity team starting my freshman year. I changed direction in college where I then briefly played with Palomar College now called San Diego State University (San Marcos). I picked up the game again in 1997 after a brief hiatus.
I started helping my friends play better golf along with many others who I met just playing or playing in golf tournaments. I then began studying the greats and their swing styles after my father-in-law gave me “The Little Red Book” by Harvey Penick. It was then I realized my mechanics and my work ethic were very similar to Ben Hogan. I then applied what I knew about golf and my experience in teaching to form my own methods with solid fundamentals, while staying true to my idea of each person having their own swing depending on size and stature among other things. This was a promising combination that brought many people to appreciate and who have a continued love for the game. Returning to the San Diego area (Imperial Beach) in 2009, I continued to teach part-time at a practice facility (Southbay Golf Center). It was there I became a Titleist Performance Institute Expert getting certified in 2014 over in Carlsbad/Oceanside which I continue to be affiliated with as a TPI certified expert. I work with V1 sports coaching software as well as having the Boditrak pressure plate that maps three different forms of force and COP (Center of Pressure) integrated into the swing in real time. This technology is said to be the gold standard of training today for the game of golf!
I am offering private golf lessons, semi-private golf lessons, group golf lessons and playing golf lessons for all ages (kids, teens, adults, seniors) and for all skill levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). So whether you need to work on some specifics like your drive, fairway, approach, chipping or putting-I would be more than happy to help!
I teach golf lessons in the Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City area at JR’s Golf Center in Bonita and will travel up to 25 miles.
